Julie Bennett Hume
Julie Bennett Hume is a folk and Americana singer-songwriter whose music reflects a lifetime immersed in roots traditions, story, and song. From early influences like Doc Watson , Stephen Stills, Maria Muldaur and The Roches to years spent playing Cajun music, old-time string band repertoire, Afro-Cuban rhythms, and the blues of Memphis Minnie, her musical path has been wide-ranging — and that breadth quietly informs everything she writes. Her songs are intimate, literate, and emotionally precise, favoring nuance over polish. Anchored by expressive vocals and intricate, open-tuned guitar work, Hume writes about memory, moral reckoning, place, and the ways personal lives intersect with history. Her work sits comfortably at the crossroads of folk storytelling and Americana grit, rooted in tradition while remaining quietly adventurous. Her latest LP, The Lorelei, represents a creative high point: a focused, resonant collection that moves between myth and lived experience with confidence and restraint. The album was named among the top LPs in the Kansas City area on radio programs curated by Chris Haghirian and Mark Manning, further solidifying Hume’s reputation as a songwriter whose work rewards close listening. After stepping away from public performance during her 30s and 40s — years spent earning a graduate degree in Austria, teaching German, and raising a family — Hume returned with renewed focus. Since releasing her first solo LP in 2016, she has released three solo albums and an additional project with the duo The Multiverse, building a body of work defined by patience, craft, and depth.Based in Kansas City, Hume is an active member of the regional music community. She serves on the board of the Heartland Song Network and is executive producer and co-host of the public affairs program She Talk Wha on KKFI. She has toured throughout the U.S. and Europe, including international performances with Lost Cowgirl Revue.
